The Band
When it comes down to it, Gordon Avenue is known for two things:
1. Infectious melodies.
2. Engaging Live Performances.
“We strive to make our shows not something you see, but something you experience” comments lead singer Gordon Avery, “whether it’s the full band or an acoustic set, we want people humming a new song when they leave.”
The Northwestern Band started when lead singer Gordon Avery returned from a 4 month venture at the nation’s only artists’ colony exclusively for up-and-coming musicians; the Contemporary Music Center (CMC).
All of the members in the band had been friends for years and done a lot of music together; they even played a small show for a friend’s graduation party in a backyard. Shortly after Avery’s return he asked the guys if they would be interested in playing a show in Portland. They all agreed and played for the first time as “Gordon Avenue” at one of the oldest running venues in America; the Satyricon. It was there that they shocked the venue’s staff by pre-selling over 150 tickets—practically selling out the Satyricon.
In the Spring of 2009, less than a year from their birth, “Gordon Avenue” released their first full length album entitled “Broken Pieces Make The Beautiful Things.” The album could be described as a Rock, Hard Rock, Punk marriage filled with “hear-em-once-sing-em-forever” catchy choruses and epic guitar solos.
“I think it’s important as a band to be true to yourself, to be honest.” says Avery. “We are diverse people and so diversity is what we bring. I think people like it when a band can be diverse, instead of pigeoned holed to one sound. You will never hear someone say ‘Every song sounds the same’ when they listen to our music.”
